Migrating from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007 Support

The move from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007 Server or is complicated and intense. Many clients contact Exiis Corporation informing us they’re in the middle of an upgrade and the upgrade has failed. When moving from Microsoft Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007 or from Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2007 it’s important to remember there is no such thing as an “Upgrade Path”; it simply does not exist. Moving from Microsoft Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007 or Exchange 2007 is actually a “Migration” between two similar yet very different messaging platforms that requires extensive planning, experience, research, and knowledge of how the migration will take place and related systems that will be affected.

Essentially, both Microsoft Exchange 2000 and 2003 Servers were designed and built on top of Windows 2000 Server and Windows 2003 Server technologies—technologies that are over 6 years old. Server hardware was limited to the 32-bit platform with some 64-bit hardware providers being available primarily to larger enterprise-class networking environments. Both Exchange 2007 Server and Exchange 2007 Server are 64-bit hardware and software reliant—there are no 32-bit versions of Exchange 2007 Server or Exchange 2007 Server available; this means an upgrade to the 64-bit platform is a requirement, not an option. Since you cannot “upgrade” 32-bit hardware, you must “migrate” to 64-bit hardware; hence your existing Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003 Server becomes obsolete at that juncture.

Migrating from Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange 2003 Server to Exchange 2007 is relatively straight-forward provided the administrator has taken the time to plan his migration wisely, research the requirements, and have implemented all the changes necessary to make the move between the messaging platforms. Exiis Corporation Support Professionals have the skills, experience, and knowledge to assist your organization in the migration process or with augmenting knowledge your current IT staff might need to complete the operation.

Windows 2008 Server recommended for Exchange 2007 Server

Customers migrating from an Exchange 2000 or 2003 Organization to an Exchange 2007 Server environment should be aware Exchange 2010 Server, the next release of Microsoft Exchange Server, will not be supported on a Windows 2003 Server. Windows 2008 Server will be  required for all future upgrades; Exiis Corporation strongly advises businesses and organizations that are planning to move to the next generation of Exchange Server to upgrade to Windows 2008 at the same time. The Windows 2008 Server Operating System requirement will be required due to the many enhancements incorporated within Exchange 2010 Server. Businesses and Organizations that have not upgraded to a Windows 2008 Server environment should take the time to research and plan for a successful Active Directory migration prior to their migration to an Exchange 2007 Organization. While it is not necessary to update all servers to Windows 2008, it is highly recommended to have Windows 2008 Server for the installation of Exchange 2007 Server.
