Enhanced Features in Microsoft Exchange 2010

Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 continues to build and improve upon the latest innovations in e-mail connectivity, real-time Instant Messaging, and Unified Communications. New and advanced features significantly lower costs associated with mailbox management, moves, and cross-forest communications. Improved tools in the area of: Archiving, Compliance, High Availability have been added for greater ease and management.

In keeping with improved management features, Microsoft has included a vast array of additional PowerShell CmdLets. Microsoft has also listened to small business and enterprise clients by adding features to the Exchange Management Console which provides for advanced management of Exchange Server services through a friendly user interface.

Small and mid-size business owners who are considering an expansion or upgrade to Exchange Server 2010 will find that their new and improved messaging environment will be highly robust, stable, safe and secure. Migrations – Novell GroupWise, Lotus Notes, Third-Party POP Mail

Clients with existing systems, whether it be a simple UNIX SMTP mail server, a Novell GroupWise implementation, or a Lotus Notes environment, Exiis Corporation consultants can assist in mapping existing and future business processes to a Microsoft Exchange environment. Migrations from existing messaging environments can be complex and challenging; oftentimes there are many concerns and questions regarding e-mail integrity, storage groups, security, and distribution lists. Consultants at Exiis Corporation can address these concerns and show you how we work with existing messaging systems to ensure a safe and smooth transition to a Microsoft Exchange environment.

Upgrades – Microsoft Exchange 4.0, Exchange 5.5, Exchange 2000, and Exchange 2003 Server Environments

Legacy Microsoft Exchange Server clients are faced with unique upgrade challenges. Depending on the version of Microsoft Exchange you are utilizing, the upgrade process could involve several steps—these steps can include several version upgrades between releases of Exchange to arrive at Exchange 2010 to simply installing a new messaging environment and providing a solution to move mail from the older release. An added challenge moving from legacy servers to Exchange 2010 are the basic hardware requirements involved—Microsoft Exchange 2010 is built entirely on 64-bit hardware and software—legacy 32-bit hardware and software platform servers are not capable of supporting Exchange 2010, requiring an upgrade. Consultants at Exiis Corporation can assist organizations and IT groups in choosing the correct hardware and software, build on existing backup processes, and assist in planning for fail-over and continuity processes.

Unified Communications

Microsoft introduced Unified Messaging Servers with Exchange 2007 Servers and continues to support the move towards Unified Communications with Exchange 2010 Server environments. At the most basic level, Unified Communications breaks down the barriers between telecom, IT, and wireless technologies providing a solution that combines all these technologies into a single solution or repository that is managed and accessed from a centralized location. Microsoft has determined the most functional and logical location for this single point of access is from within the Microsoft Outlook client. The “Universal Inbox” concept in its simplest terms means all e-mail, voicemail, instant messaging, and fax communications are delivered to and access from your desktop inbox.

Interestingly enough, Microsoft Exchange 2010 does not meet all the requirements for a complete Unified Communications environment. While Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 will deliver a large percentage of these requirements, such as integrating with IP telephony systems and delivering messages to mobile devices, Exchange 2010 does not natively provide FAX communications (Exchange 2007 Server clients should be aware of this change prior to migrating to Exchange 2010), Instant Messaging, nor real-presence information; these services are provided by third-party providers, add-on software products, and by integrating additional server technologies such as Microsoft Office Communications Server (OCS).

While Microsoft Exchange 2010 may not be the complete answer to Unified Communications, it is a strong contender for providing a sufficient amount of Unified Messaging throughout the organization. Exchange 2010 is a solid choice for building the foundation towards a complete Unified Communications solution; with built-in “hooks” for developers and plenty of third-party providers developing software that fills in the gaps, Exchange 2010 provides plenty of Unified Messaging options to build upon. Exiis Corporation consultants can explain the missing gaps between a complete Unified Communications environment and Exchange 2010, provide solutions based on your organizations infrastructure and messaging requirements, and deliver a complete project plan that addresses business requirements.

Professional Documentation

Professional documentation is included with every engagement. Exiis Corporation professional project managers, system architects, and enterprise administrators work within a highly collaborative environment utilizing Microsoft Office SharePoint Server and Microsoft Office Project Server for reporting and documentation purposes. Clients are assigned a dedicated SharePoint Team Site where they are encouraged to review, collaborate, and participate with their on-going project.
